The principal applicant must have at least a high school education (a completed 12-year equivalent) OR two years of qualifying work experience within the past five years in an occupation needing at least two years of training or experience.
Every Diversity Visa entrant must meet the education or work requirement, but only the principal applicant has to satisfy it. A high school education means successful completion of a formal elementary and secondary course comparable to a 12-year US education.
If you do not have that, you can qualify through work experience: two years of experience within the last five years in an occupation that, by Department of Labor standards, requires at least two years of training or experience. Spouses and children listed as derivatives do not have to meet this requirement themselves; they qualify through the principal applicant.
