Duration of status means you can stay as long as you maintain F-1 status and make normal progress toward your educational goal; you do not need a separate extension from USCIS while you remain in status.
F-1 students are typically admitted for duration of status rather than a fixed end date. This means you may remain in the United States as long as you are maintaining status and making normal progress toward completing your educational objective, without applying to USCIS for an extension of stay.
Maintaining status includes enrolling in and pursuing a full course of study each term, keeping your Form I-20 valid, working only when authorized, and keeping your information current with your designated school official. Falling below a full course of load without authorization, unauthorized work, or letting your I-20 lapse can all break your status, which can have serious consequences.
