At the time you apply you must prove at least A2 written and B1 spoken skills in a national language (German, French or Italian), depending on where you live.
Language ability is a core integration requirement. For ordinary naturalisation you must show, when you submit your application, at least A2 level in writing and B1 level in speaking in the relevant national language of your area.
These levels refer to the Common European Framework. Proof is usually provided through a recognised language certificate or other accepted evidence. The required national language depends on your canton or commune of residence — German, French or Italian.
