The D1 is Portugal's standard residency visa for non-EU salaried employees who have an employment contract or promise of employment with a Portuguese employer.
The D1 visa is the standard route for non-EU nationals taking up a salaried, subordinate (employee) role in Portugal. The foundation of the application is a signed employment contract or promise of employment with a Portuguese company.
Beyond the contract, you generally need means of subsistence for the stay — which the work contract usually satisfies — along with proof of accommodation in Portugal, a clean criminal record, a valid passport and insurance. The process is Portugal's usual two-step model: apply for the visa at a consulate or VFS, then apply for the residence permit with AIMA after arrival, with the visa decision due within around 60 days.
Where the D3 is for highly qualified roles, the D1 covers standard employee positions, so the contract itself is central. ACME can help you check that your contract and supporting documents meet the requirements and prepare the application, and we always suggest confirming the current details on vistos.mne.gov.pt before you apply.
