Nationals of EU-15/EFTA states are generally granted the C permit after 5 continuous, orderly years of residence; most other (third-country) nationals qualify after 10 years.
The Settlement Permit C (Niederlassungsbewilligung / permis d'etablissement) is for 'settled foreign nationals.' Nationals of EU-15/EFTA states who have resided in Switzerland in an orderly and uninterrupted manner for five continuous years are granted a C permit if they meet the conditions. For most third-country nationals the standard threshold is ten years. The earliest date a cantonal authority may issue the permit is set within this framework, and integration criteria apply.
