The initial permit is granted for up to three years (or the contract length if shorter) and is renewable, typically in two-year periods, as long as the conditions still apply.
An HQP authorisation is generally issued for up to three years, or for the duration of the employment contract if that is shorter. This gives a longer initial validity than many ordinary work permits.
Renewal is possible, usually for further two-year periods, provided the qualifying conditions continue to be met, for example that you remain in a qualifying highly skilled role with the required salary. Time accumulated on this permit can count toward eventual long-term residence.
