The right to settle is not time-limited, but the permit lapses after more than six months abroad unless you apply in advance to keep it; that retention can be granted for up to four years.
The right to settle in Switzerland under a C permit is not subject to any time restrictions or conditions while you live in the country. However, if you leave, the permit expires after an absence of more than six months. You can apply (before leaving) to maintain the settlement permit during a longer absence; this can be granted for up to four years. If you do not announce your departure and stay away longer than six months, the permit lapses, so plan extended trips abroad in advance with the cantonal migration office.
