Third-country nationals can obtain a G permit, but the bar is considerably higher than for EU/EFTA citizens. You must hold a permanent right of residence in a neighbouring country (Germany, France, Italy, Austria, or Liechtenstein), have lived in that country's border zone for at least six months, and satisfy Swiss labour-market requirements. These usually involve employer sponsorship, an assessment of labour-market availability, and sometimes qualification or quota considerations. Because of these conditions, non-EU/EFTA G permits are harder to obtain and are often initially issued for a shorter validity.
