You must prove stable, sufficient resources to live in France for the whole stay without working; the reference figure is broadly aligned with the French minimum wage (around 1,477 euros per month for a single person).
French authorities assess whether you have enough regular income or savings to support yourself throughout your stay without relying on the French welfare system. Acceptable resources can come from pensions, rental or investment income, savings, or a formal financial guarantee from a solvent third party.
There is no single fixed legal amount published as an absolute minimum, but consular and prefecture practice uses the French minimum wage (SMIC) as a benchmark, so showing income or savings at or above that level for each month of your stay is the safest approach. Provide clear, recent, translated evidence such as bank statements, pension statements, and proof of any guarantor's means.
