In the general case, a joining spouse receives a long-stay visa equivalent to a residence permit (VLS-TS) for the first year, which must be validated online within three months.
Once reunification is approved, your relatives obtain visas to enter France. For most nationalities, the spouse arrives on a VLS-TS (a long-stay visa acting as a residence permit) valid for the first year, and minor children enter with a family reunification visa.
The VLS-TS must be validated online within three months of arrival. After the first year, the family typically applies for a temporary residence card, and under several bilateral agreements the spouse may receive the same category of permit as the sponsor. Spouses and children over 16 are also asked to sign the republican integration contract (CIR).
