The standard requirement is at least three years of uninterrupted legal residence. Shorter periods apply in some cases, such as one year for a dependent ancestor or two years for the spouse of a Hungarian citizen or long-term resident.
The National Residence Card is Hungary's permanent residence status, and the usual qualifying period is three years of continuous, lawful residence in Hungary.
There are several shortened routes. A dependent ancestor living with an eligible sponsor may qualify after one year, and a spouse married to a Hungarian citizen or long-term resident may qualify after two years of residence. People with Hungarian ancestry or former Hungarian citizenship, and minor children of long-term residents or recognized refugees, may also qualify under specific rules. Because the qualifying period depends on your category, confirm which timeline applies to you.
