Can I lose my Luxembourg long-term resident status if I leave the country?

Long-term resident status is durable but not unconditional. If you leave the territory of the European Union for twelve consecutive months, the status can be withdrawn. For people who previously held an EU Blue Card, this tolerance is longer, at twenty-four months.

Separately, prolonged absence from Luxembourg itself, of around six years, can also lead to loss of the status. On a practical level, if you intend to be away from Luxembourg for more than six months you are expected to declare your departure and return your residence permit. If you plan extended travel, keep these thresholds in mind so you do not inadvertently forfeit a status that took years to earn.
