You must be of good character and conduct, and certain convictions, such as a sentence of six months or more or terrorism-related offences, can bar naturalisation.
Good life and conduct is a firm condition for naturalisation by decree. Your record is examined, and serious convictions can make you ineligible, including a custodial sentence of six months or more, or convictions for crimes or acts of terrorism.
Your behaviour toward French institutions and republican values is also considered. Being subject to an active expulsion order or ban from French territory will block an application. If you have a record, it is wise to get specific advice on whether and when you can apply, rather than assuming any conviction is automatically disqualifying.
