The Critical Skills permit targets in-demand occupations, does not require a Labour Market Needs Test, and offers a faster route to long-term residence than the General Employment Permit.
The Critical Skills Employment Permit is designed for highly sought-after roles, such as many ICT, engineering and healthcare occupations, where Ireland has recognised shortages. Because the shortage is already accepted, you do not have to advertise the role first through a Labour Market Needs Test.
It also has more favourable conditions for families and for settling long-term. After completing the permit period you can apply directly for permission to live and work without needing a new employment permit, which the General Employment Permit does not offer in the same way.
