For most settlement routes you must pass the Life in the UK test, a computer-based test on British history, culture and values, before you apply for ILR.
You also normally need to prove your knowledge of English, usually at the required level, through an approved test, a degree taught in English, or by being a national of a majority English-speaking country. Some people are exempt, for example due to age or a long-term physical or mental condition. Sort both requirements out well before you apply.
