A visitor visa can be valid for up to 10 years, but never beyond your passport's expiry date (or your biometrics validity), whichever comes first.
A multiple-entry visitor visa can be issued for up to 10 years. However, it cannot be valid longer than your passport, so a passport expiring sooner will shorten the visa's validity.
Visa validity is different from how long you can stay. Even with a 10-year visa, each individual visit is normally limited to six months unless an officer decides otherwise.
Biometrics generally need to be given only once every 10 years, which helps make repeat trips to Canada easier during the life of the visa.
