You must show sufficient knowledge of French, demonstrated by a recognised diploma or language test at the required level, plus knowledge of French society through a civic exam.
Naturalisation requires that you have assimilated into the French community, and language is central to that. You must prove a sufficient command of spoken and written French using an accepted diploma or test certificate.
Beyond language, you must also show knowledge of French history, culture and society and adherence to the values of the Republic. This is assessed through a civic examination and an interview at the prefecture. Underestimating the language and civic requirements is a common reason applications stall, so prepare your certificate and study for the civic exam in advance.
