You must be able and intend to work in the UK, but you have wide freedom — paid or voluntary, full or part-time, employed or self-employed.
Unlike most UK work visas, the Ancestry visa does not tie you to a single sponsoring employer. You do, however, need to be able to work and intend to work while you are in the UK.
Once here, your options are broad: you can take paid or voluntary work, work full-time or part-time, change jobs freely, and be employed or self-employed. You can also study. This flexibility is one of the main attractions of the route compared with sponsored work visas.
