D7 residents are expected to be physically present for most of the period, typically around six consecutive or eight non-consecutive months per year, and absences beyond the allowed limits can jeopardise renewal.
Unlike investor routes with very light stay rules, the D7 expects you to actually live in Portugal. The presence expectation over the first two-year permit is substantial, commonly described as needing roughly sixteen months of presence across those two years.
In practice that means planning your life around Portugal rather than treating the permit as a backup. If you cannot meet the presence requirement, the D7 may not be the right route, and you should not assume long absences will be tolerated at renewal.
