You generally need official civil documents such as marriage certificates for a spouse, birth certificates for children, and evidence of dependency for adult children or parents, usually legalised or apostilled and translated.
Because reunification depends on proving a genuine qualifying relationship, civil-status documents are central. A spouse provides a marriage certificate, children provide birth certificates linking them to the sponsor, and partners provide proof of a stable relationship.
For dependent adult children or ascendants you also need evidence of financial or other dependency, and for studying adult children proof of enrolment. These foreign documents normally must be legalised or apostilled and officially translated into Portuguese. Preparing complete, properly authenticated documents is the single biggest factor in avoiding delays.
