If you do not yet qualify for settlement, you may be able to apply to extend your stay for a further period instead, depending on your circumstances.
A refusal does not automatically mean you must leave immediately. The long residence rules allow for an extension of stay (commonly for a further 2 years) where you do not yet meet the full settlement criteria.
The right next step depends on why the application was refused - for example excessive absences, a gap in lawful residence, or a missing test. Because the consequences of getting it wrong are serious, it is wise to get professional advice before reapplying or extending.
