You generally need to have lived lawfully in an EU member state for an uninterrupted period of five years before you can be granted EU Long-Term Residence status.
EU Long-Term Residence (Daueraufenthalt-EU) is built around a continuous five-year residence requirement. The clock is based on lawful, uninterrupted residence, so long absences or gaps in your legal status can interrupt the count.
If you hold an EU Blue Card, there is a helpful exception: you may add together periods of residence spent in several EU member states to reach the five years, rather than having to spend the whole period in a single country. This makes the status particularly attractive for mobile Blue Card professionals.
