It checks that at least half of your children live in Australia, or that more of your children live in Australia than in any other single country. The test cannot be waived.
The balance of family test measures your ties to Australia by looking at where your children live. It counts all of your and your partner's children, including stepchildren and adopted children, wherever they live in the world.
To pass, you generally need at least half of your children to be Australian citizens, permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens usually resident in Australia, or you need more of your children living in Australia than in any other single country.
This is a strict requirement. The Department has stated the test will not be waived even in compelling or exceptional circumstances, so it is worth confirming you pass before you apply.
