Absences are limited: typically no single absence longer than six months, and no more than around ten months of absence across the whole five-year qualifying period.
Continuity of residence is essential for long-term status, so extended time outside the country can break the qualifying period. As a general rule, you should not be absent for more than six months in a row.
In addition, total absences across the full five years are capped, commonly cited as no more than about ten months overall. Short trips abroad are fine, but long or frequent absences can reset or jeopardise your eligibility. Keep careful records of your travel and confirm the exact limits before any extended trip.
