You need a national D visa when you plan to stay in Switzerland for longer than 90 days, for example to work, study, join family or settle. A Schengen C visa only covers short stays of up to 90 days.
The D visa is a national long-stay visa. It is the entry document used by non-EU/EFTA nationals who intend to live in Switzerland for more than three months, whatever the reason — employment, study, family reunification or other long-term residence.
The Schengen C visa, by contrast, is a short-stay visa for tourism, visits or business trips of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. If your purpose involves staying beyond 90 days, the C visa is not enough and you must apply for a D visa at the Swiss representation abroad.
