After holding a valid temporary residence permit continuously for five years, non-EU nationals can apply to AIMA for permanent residence, with A2-level Portuguese, no relevant convictions and means of support.
Portugal's permanent residence authorisation (autorização de residência permanente) is the settled status available to holders of a valid temporary residence permit who have lived legally in Portugal for at least five years.
The core requirements are five years of continuous legal temporary residence, no relevant criminal convictions during that period, Portuguese language proficiency at A2 level or above, and demonstrated means of financial support. The application is made to AIMA on Portuguese territory.
Because continuity of residence and the A2 language requirement are central, it helps to keep your records in order and prepare for the language element across the qualifying years. ACME can help you check whether your residence and documents qualify and prepare the application, and we always suggest confirming the current rules on aima.gov.pt before you apply.
