Your first permit is restricted to one profession and sector with any employer; changing sector or profession during that first year needs ministerial authorisation, but once you hold a valid permit beyond the first you can change sector or profession without new authorisation, subject to renewal conditions.
The first salaried worker permit is deliberately restrictive. It limits you to a single profession and sector, identified on the permit by an ISCO occupation code, although you may work for different employers within that field. To switch to a different sector or profession during this first period, you must obtain ministerial authorisation.
The restriction eases over time. Once you move beyond the first permit and hold a valid residence permit, you can change sector or profession without applying for new authorisation, provided you continue to meet the renewal conditions. This staged approach means your flexibility in the Luxembourg labour market grows the longer you have been legally working there.
