Family reunification lets spouses and minor children — and, since the 2024 reform, parents of certain skilled workers — join a family member legally resident in Germany. Spouses of skilled workers and Blue Card holders enjoy several waivers.
Family Reunification (Familiennachzug, §§27–36a Residence Act) lets a sponsor with a valid German residence title bring a spouse and minor children, and since the 2024 reform also parents of certain skilled workers. The sponsor must hold a valid residence title and a secured livelihood, both spouses must be at least 18, and you will need proof of the family relationship.
Germany has made this route notably easier for skilled migrants. Spouses normally must show basic German (A1) before entry, but spouses of skilled workers, Blue Card holders, settlement-permit holders and EU long-term residents are exempt. The reform also waived proof of adequate living space for skilled workers and Blue Card holders, and lets workers with a first permit issued from March 2024 bring parents in some cases. Once in Germany, family members generally receive full work authorisation.
The national D visa costs EUR 75. Conditions vary by the sponsor's permit type, so confirm current requirements with the relevant German mission or Foreigners' Authority. ACME can help you understand which waivers apply to your family based on your residence title.
