This permit lets a spouse or qualifying partner and children under 18 join a person living in Finland. The sponsor must meet a net-income requirement that scales with household size and is higher in the Helsinki area.
The Residence Permit for a Family Member (Perheenjasen) allows spouses, qualifying partners, and minor children to join a Finnish citizen or a residence-permit holder living in Finland. There must be a genuine family relationship — for cohabiting partners, generally at least two years together, with some exceptions. The sponsor in Finland must show sufficient net monthly income for the household, and that income cannot come from social assistance or unemployment benefits.
The income requirement scales with household size and is higher in the Helsinki metropolitan area. A helpful feature is that family members can fast-track alongside a qualifying work permit — so if you are coming on a specialist, Blue Card, ICT or startup permit, your family can apply at the same time. The first electronic permit fee is EUR 750.
One planning point: family-permit processing can take longer than work-permit processing and may run up to the legal maximum, so it is wise to apply early. Income requirements are updated periodically, so confirm the current figure for your household on migri.fi. ACME can help you coordinate a family application alongside a work permit.
