You must report the divorce or death to the regional directorate within 30 days. You may keep residing in Hungary if at least five years have passed since your first permit was issued, or if you independently meet the residence conditions.
A divorce or the death of the sponsor is a change you are legally required to report to the regional directorate within 30 days, with supporting documents. This is important because your permit was originally based on the family relationship.
You are not automatically forced to leave, however. If five years have elapsed since your initial family reunification permit was issued, you can acquire an independent right to reside. Even before five years, you may continue residing if you can satisfy the residence conditions on your own. This protects family members from suddenly losing status due to events outside their control.
