The initial student VLS-TS runs from 4 months up to 1 year; after your first year you can usually obtain a multi-year card covering the remaining length of your studies.
Your first student permit is the VLS-TS, valid for between 4 months and 1 year depending on your course. The first renewal is typically a one-year card.
Once you have completed a year of study in France, you can normally apply for a pluriannual (multi-year) card that covers the rest of your programme, which can run for several years up to the planned end of your studies. This avoids yearly renewals, but you still must keep meeting the conditions, including genuine academic progress.
