You need 5 years of continuous lawful stay in Luxembourg; absences of under 6 consecutive months (and no more than 10 months in total over the 5 years) generally do not break continuity.
EU long-term resident status is granted after five years of continuous and lawful residence in Luxembourg. The residence must be legal throughout, so periods spent without a valid permit do not count.
Short trips abroad are allowed without resetting the clock. Absences of less than six consecutive months are tolerated, as long as your total absence does not exceed ten months across the whole five-year period. Longer absences of up to twelve consecutive months can be accepted for specific reasons such as serious illness, pregnancy or studies. For beneficiaries of international protection, part of the time between application and the grant of protection can also count.
