Will time spent abroad affect my Hungarian National Residence Card?

Permanent residence in Hungary is expected to reflect that Hungary remains your home, so prolonged absence has consequences. A departure exceeding six months can lead to automatic withdrawal of the National Residence Card.

This is stricter than the EU Residence Card's longer absence allowances, so if you plan a lengthy trip or temporary relocation, check the rules first. The card can also be withdrawn for other reasons, such as the original grounds for issuance significantly changing, the dissolution of the family relationship it was based on, providing false information, security concerns, or an expulsion order.
