Does time on a study permit count toward permanent residence in Norway?

A common misunderstanding is that years spent studying in Norway automatically build toward permanent residence. In general, time on a study permit does not count toward the residence period required for a permanent residence permit.

If your goal is to settle in Norway long term, you usually need to move onto a qualifying permit after your studies, for example as a skilled worker. After finishing your education you may be able to apply for a job seeker permit to look for skilled work, and qualifying work time can then count toward permanent residence.
