Is there a language requirement for Canadian citizenship?

If you are between 18 and 54 years old on the day you sign your application, you must prove adequate knowledge of English or French. The benchmark is speaking and listening skills equivalent to level 4 of the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) for English or the Niveaux de competence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) for French. Acceptable proof includes results from approved language tests, certain Canadian education, or government-funded language programs. Applicants under 18 or 55 and older are exempt from the language requirement.
