Spouses and registered partners, cohabiting partners (usually after two years together or with a shared child), and a sponsor's children under 18 in their custody. Other relatives generally do not qualify.
Finnish law recognises a defined set of family members: a spouse or registered partner, a cohabiting partner who has normally lived with the sponsor for at least two continuous years (the time requirement can be waived if you share custody of a child or have other serious reasons), and minor children under 18 in the sponsor's custody.
"Other relatives" such as adult children or parents generally do not qualify, unless the sponsor is a Finnish citizen or holds refugee or subsidiary protection status. Identifying the correct family relationship is the first step in any application.
