The D7 leads to a renewable residence permit, then to permanent residence after five years of legal residence; citizenship now generally requires longer under the 2026 Nationality Law.
You enter on the D7 visa, convert it to a residence permit with AIMA, and renew it on the standard cycle. After five years of continuous legal residence you can apply for permanent residence, a threshold the recent reforms left unchanged.
Citizenship is a separate step. Changes to the Nationality Law applying to applications from 2026 extended naturalisation to seven years for EU and CPLP nationals and ten years for others, and tightened how residence time is counted. Keep your permits continuously valid and confirm the current rules before counting on a specific date.
