Can I get permanent residence in Latvia through an employment residence permit?

The employment residence permit is a temporary status, but it can build toward permanence. After a continuous five-year stay in Latvia, and on passing the test of knowledge of the official Latvian language at least at the A2 level, holders may apply for a permanent residence permit.

This makes two things important from day one: keeping your residence continuous without disqualifying gaps, and starting to learn Latvian early so the A2 requirement is not a last-minute obstacle. Permanent residence gives far more stability than renewing a temporary permit tied to a single employer.
