The subclass 820 lets you live, work and study while you wait, but the permanent subclass 801 makes you an Australian permanent resident from the day it is granted. In addition to what you could do on the 820, the 801 lets you stay in Australia indefinitely and sponsor eligible family members to come to Australia.
You can access Medicare and have full work rights protected by Australian workplace law. You can travel to and from Australia for 5 years from grant while the travel facility is valid; after that you need a Resident Return visa to re-enter as a permanent resident. After meeting the residence requirements you may apply for Australian citizenship.
