How long is a first Finnish researcher residence permit valid?

A first residence permit for research is granted for up to two years. If your hosting agreement covers a shorter period, the permit may be tied to that shorter duration.

When your research project runs longer than the initial permit, you apply for an extended permit before the first one expires. At extension you may need to show that your research is progressing.

Plan extensions well ahead of the expiry date so there is no gap in your legal residence while your research continues.
