Is there a German language requirement before joining family in Austria?

As a rule, an adult applying for family reunification must demonstrate basic German at the A1 level of the Common European Framework before the residence title is issued. This is meant to support early integration once you arrive in Austria.

There are defined exceptions. Children under 14 are not required to sit the test, and exemptions can also apply for certain medical conditions and for family members of specific sponsor categories. Because the exemptions are narrow and documented, you should confirm your situation against the official requirements rather than assume you qualify for a waiver.
