The IMP is for temporary work, but the skilled Canadian experience and employer relationships it provides can support a later permanent residence application through economic programs.
IMP permits are temporary by nature and do not themselves confer permanent residence. They are designed to let employers fill roles and let workers gain Canadian experience.
That experience can be valuable later. Skilled work done under an IMP permit may count toward eligibility for Express Entry programs or provincial nominee programs, and an ongoing employer relationship can sometimes support a nomination or job-offer points. Many workers use the IMP as an entry point and then pursue a dedicated permanent residence stream.
