Does time as a student in Finland count toward permanent residence?

Whether your study time counts toward a permanent residence permit depends on your permit type. An A (continuous) permit, typically granted for higher education degree studies, builds continuous residence that can count toward a permanent permit.

A B (temporary) permit, granted for example for non-higher-education studies or as an exchange student, does not count toward the qualifying period for permanent residence.

If permanent residence is a long-term goal, the type of programme and permit you start with matters. After meeting the residence period and other conditions, you can apply for a permanent permit.
