The first visa is granted for 2 years. You can then extend it in 3-year periods, with no limit on the number of extensions while you keep meeting the rules.
Your initial permission as a new applicant is 2 years. During the first 6 months you must work for your sponsor, and for the rest you have freedom over your employment.
When your permission is running out, you can apply to extend for a further 3 years at a time. There is no cap on extensions as long as you continue to meet the requirements, including the earnings rule for the period before your application. Many people use this route to build towards the 5-year settlement point.
