Permanent residence means your right to stay is not tied to a specific purpose or end date, and you do not have to keep re-justifying your stay the way temporary permit holders do.
However, the plastic residence card is a separate document with its own validity period. You must apply to replace it at the competent administrative unit before it expires. Letting the card lapse does not automatically cancel your status, but it can cause practical problems with travel, work, and identification, so treat the renewal date seriously.
