How do I extend my stay in Canada as a visitor?

If you want to stay in Canada longer than your authorized period, you must apply to extend your stay and obtain a visitor record. A visitor record is not a visa; it sets a new date by which you must leave.

You should apply at least 30 days before your current status expires. Applying before expiry generally lets you remain in Canada under maintained status while a decision is pending.

A visitor record does not by itself let you re-enter Canada after leaving; if you travel outside Canada and your visa has expired, you may need a valid visa to return.
