Although long-term residence is indefinite in principle, it is not unconditional. The most common way to lose it is by spending a prolonged continuous period outside the EU beyond the allowed limit, which can cause the status to lapse.
It can also be withdrawn if it was obtained fraudulently or on other legally defined grounds. To protect the status, keep within the permitted absence limits and renew the residence card on time when it expires.
