What is the difference between Government-Assisted Refugees and privately sponsored refugees in Canada?

Under the Government-Assisted Refugees (GAR) program, refugees referred by UNHCR or partner organisations receive financial and settlement support from the Canadian government, generally for up to one year after arrival.

Under the Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) program, sponsoring groups in Canada take responsibility for providing financial, material and emotional settlement support, usually for up to one year. There is also a blended option that shares costs between private sponsors and the government. The route affects who provides your initial support, but resettled refugees become permanent residents.
