A key condition that surprises many applicants is the Italian language requirement. You must prove knowledge of Italian at A2 level of the Common European Framework, shown through an official certificate, an Italian school or university qualification, or completion of a recognised integration course.
There are exemptions. Minors under 14 and people with documented serious learning or health conditions do not have to sit the test, and recognised refugees follow modified rules. If none of these apply, plan to prepare for and pass the A2 test before applying.
