Is the Hungarian cultural knowledge exam required for the EU Residence Card?

As of 1 January 2025, the Hungarian cultural knowledge exam certificate became a mandatory document for the EU Residence Card application. This is a formal requirement alongside proof of accommodation, subsistence and comprehensive health insurance.

Because this is a relatively new requirement, applicants who began the process earlier are sometimes caught out by it. Plan to sit and pass the exam well before you submit, so your file is complete and you avoid a deficiency notice that delays the decision.
